Acetone's first full-length LP is a mixed bag that shows the band's disparate influences yet also gives a blueprint for the music it would create from here on out. Not quite completely submerged in the dimmed-light aesthetic of later LPs, this is more the sound of band members paying tribute to their heroes while not exactly sure which way to go themselves. The high points include the brilliant slow-burn blues of "Come On" (which works as an homage to the Velvet Underground's "Ocean"). The fourth track, "Chills," takes a line from Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta's "You're the One That I Want" and follows it up with a high-velocity rock grind. Scratchy, upbeat garage numbers like "Pinch" show Acetone's love of American underground rock, while "Sundown" is the band's version of Isaac Hayes' version of "Walk on By" as filtered through Mudhoney. It's not all unfamiliar territory; "Endless Summer" is a slower, droning Black Sabbath-esque grind complete with the dual harmonies that the band would smooth to perfection later on. The seven-plus minute "Louise" is a beautiful, simple, blissed-out piece of guitar pop that drifts along the Pacific coast at an amiable pace. As a debut, the album works more as an extension of the band's record collection than a complete statement. But there are trademark elements of this often overlooked band that would later come to fruition, and the album works as a hazy introduction to Acetone's obvious talent.
