This release by oboist Christopher Palameta and his Notturna ensemble features a program that is not hypothetical but is based on surviving programs of concerts mounted in Calcutta in 1789 by the entrepreneur William Hamilton Bird. Calcutta (Kolkata) was home to about 4,000 British expatriates and boasted a concert scene that kept abreast of fairly recent London trends. The English, many of them young women learning to play keyboard instruments (apparently still mostly the harpsichord at this great distance), also tried to replicate the Indian music they heard, and Bird seems to have had some of these efforts written down and to have published the results. Notturna uses its own arrangements in these, although it would have been useful to hear them as Bird published them. These are, without question, the most interesting parts of Palameta's program here, and one feels a strong desire to hear more of them. The Indian materials are reduced to just a whiff within basically European structure. It is hard to think of another example where the reaction of a musical mind when it is confronted with something fundamentally alien is depicted so clearly. There are other interesting features to the program as well; it mixes fairly contemporary music by Johann Christian Bach and Carl Friedrich Abel (who had their own successful Bach-Abel concert series) with earlier music by Handel and Purcell. Palameta suggests that for a listener of the time, the earlier music would have had overtones of empire. One of the Purcell airs is fitted out with Indian instruments by the group. The ATMA Classique label's sound from a Montreal-area church is vague and unsuited to this chamber music, and one might object to some other decisions here, but the album does a great service by opening up a hitherto unknown repertory.
