This awarded release displays the internationally renowned trio in the peak of its excellence. Visiting classics such as "Aquarela Do Brasil" (Ary Barroso), hard sambas from the newer generations very popular for 20 years ("Samba Dobrado," Djavan), instrumental themes almost unknown by the broader audience ("Antiqua," Tom Jobim), they keep the same high standards of instrumental performance, arranging, and expression. Very dear to them are trio unisons, sharply explored through exciting conventions. Piano-bowed bass unisons are explored sensitively in the theme exposition for Luiz Chaves' original "Ao Piazzolla," carrying the nostalgic feel of the Argentinean master's compositions. Following this melancholic and longing tune, "Coisa Feita" (Bosco/Blanc/Emílio), a hard samba very popular in its sung version, achieves a true instrumental personality in the trio's recreation. "Beatriz" (Chico Buarque/Edu Lobo), originally from the Circo Místico soundtrack, is a rare moment of modern harmonization joining pure musical poetry under classical treatment. The vibrant "Asa" ("Zoo Blues," Djavan) leaves nothing to be explained. There's also a medley with songs made famous by singer Milton Nascimento, properly expanded in their harmonic possibilities, an Amilton Godoy samba original (with Dulce Auriemo), and another Jobim tune, 1970's "Tema de Amor de Gabriela," the original theme for the soap opera Gabriela that was based on Jorge Amado's masterpiece. The tune, romantic and intense, gives room to a fully energetic baião ending, properly suited for the album closing. An excellent Brazilian trio album with no envelopes pushed, just plain good samba improvisation as well as excellent arrangements and performances.
