The late mountain climber Chantal Mauduit is commemorated with this 2001 CD of recited poetry en français and Classical and Romantic piano music, though the genuinely inspirational story of her heroic accomplishments is eclipsed by the artists' grim eulogizing over her tragic death. Pianist François-René Duchâble drubs the listener into despondency with his thick, heavy-handed, and utterly inelegant playing of somber pieces by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, among others; and Alain Carré compounds the dreariness with his gloomy recitation of funereal poetry by André Velter. One hesitates to judge the intentions of the performers, the poet, or the producers of Tombeau de Chantal Mauduit, but these outpourings of grief seem too forced and sentimental to reflect sincere personal feeling; one senses a commercial interest in exploiting a celebrity's death. Along the lines of the numerous memorials released after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, this album seems fabricated for mass-market mourners, and it seems calculated merely to produce cathartic tears. But on a higher level, as music and as poetry, it fails to convince, and lacking refinement or subtlety, this dismal tribute disc does not reward repeated listening. The sound quality is mediocre.
