Like many other installments in Columbia's late-'80s series American Originals, the Stonewall Jackson volume contains several of his biggest hits -- in this case, "A Wound Time Can't Erase," "Smoke Along the Track," "Waterloo," "Life to Go," and "Blues Plus Booze (Means I Lose)" -- but it overlooks many others. These omissions are major: the number one comeback hit "BJ the DJ," "Why I'm Walkin'," "One Look at Heaven," and most importantly, the first recorded version of the classic "I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water." So, it's an ineffective overview but a modestly enjoyable sampler, which would have seemed better if there were better Jackson collections on the market -- and there weren't until Collectors Choice's 2002 release, The Best of Stonewall Jackson. By the time that was released, this American Originals disc was long out of print, and since the 2002 collection is so good, there's no reason to seek this collection out anymore.
