A few things stand out on the best selling album of 1982: Cougar was cultivating an image; some lyrics do not hold up; and the classics remain unimpeachable. Those songs, "Hurts So Good" and "Jack and Diane," are woven into the fabric of Americana. There's no escaping the comparison to a Midwestern Springsteen, right down to the rasp and the underdog flag. A storyteller, Cougar is at his best on "Jack and Diane," with its baby-rattle inspired percussion and hiccuping guitars. The scene-setting is iconic: teenage Tastee Freeze philosophers — "Jack, he's gonna be a football star / Diane's debutante backseat of Jacky's car" — figuring out the future. Despite the tough-guy image, Cougar's unafraid to cut a rug on the snarling "Hurts So good" and the title track with its jaunty organ. He toys with country rock ("Danger List"), Southern boogie ("Can You Take It") and even summons up a cornfield tribute to doo-wop sway for "Hand to Hold On To." Skip the flute-laden "Weakest Moments," but don't miss the dive-bar vibes of "Thundering Hearts" — as uncomplicated and American as they come. © Qobuz
