When his tour was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, pianist and big-name crooner Harry Connick Jr. was forced to stop everything and take refuge with his family in his Connecticut home. And, like other singers around the world like Paul McCartney, he decided not to let himself go to seed. With the means he had at hand, he recorded and produced an album all by himself. He provides the vocals, of course, but everything else as well, from the selection of compositions and arrangements to playing each instrument himself, from piano to guitar by way of synthesisers, a good old Hammond organ, a Wurlitzer, a saxophone, and even a glockenspiel. This is testament to what this true one-man-band can do. From the get-go, this album is already quite a performance. And what might Harry Connick Jr. be singing about, all alone in his Connecticut home? Well, Harry wonders about an important part of his private life: his relationship to God and his faith. Hence the title, simple and explicit: Alone with My Faith. As he explains: "I was able to go deep within myself as a musician and a man, uninterrupted by the normalcies of collaboration or human interaction. It was a sort of ‘musical isolation chamber’, a silent retreat, the silence only broken by the sound of my own voice, the instruments I played and the occasional microphone I inadvertently knocked over, as I’m not the most graceful recording engineer that ever lived"! Alongside a few standards and traditional pieces, Harry Connick Jr. wrote and recorded songs about the story of his experience of quarantine, "I, like most of us, felt joy, sadness, doubt, conviction, melancholy and inspiration - all the emotions that faith, or lack thereof, can elicit. Even though many of the songs are Christian, my hope is that they will resonate with people of all faiths”. In total, thirteen songs, including an intimate and spirited interpretation of Amazing Grace, a foundational American hymn, some forays between soul, scat, hip hop and jazz on Look Who I Found, or the surprising Thank You For Waiting (For Me), which is not far from Prince in his Musicology period or the solo adventures of Donald Fagen. Just as surprising is the closing track, Panis Angelicus, a setting to music of the words of St. Thomas Aquinas... Isolation has done Harry Connick Jr. some good: he has produced an inspired, inspiring album. © Yan Céh / Qobuz
