Passing away in 1998, Junior Kimbrough isn’t the most well-known blues musician. The main reason for this is that he never really had a career - his first album was released when he was over 60 and he hardly played concerts outside his city. He was a local, home-grown bluesman who played mostly in his own club in Holly Springs, in northern Mississippi. To hear him, you had to go and see him. And that's what people like Iggy Pop and members of U2 and Sonic Youth were doing. Junior Kimbrough was not just any musician. He was an underground legend. Despite having played music for a long time (he learned to play guitar from rocker Charlie Feathers in the 50s), he didn't release All Night Long - his debut album - until 1992. Probably because the public came looking for him. It’s an album that truly encapsulates his sound: a live album, recorded in his club, where he could stretch a song out to last an hour. His style is emblematic of the hypnotic, heated electric blues of North Mississippi, but Junior Kimbrough turns up the thermostat like nobody else. His music is a trancelike blues, flowing like lava from a volcano. Junior Kimbrough had probably never heard of Can or Hendrix, but his music seems to bring the two together at the bottom of the Mississippi. The day this album was recorded, lightning struck Junior Kimbrough’s juke joint. An incredible album. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
