The Left Coast referred to on this collection of art songs is Canada's; all of the songs come from Vancouver, British Columbia. The composers are likely to be unknown outside Canada and perhaps even outside the Canadian West, which makes the collection valuable on its face. With two exceptions, all of the composers are from the generation born in the 1950s and '60s. To these ears, those two are the most interesting, but listeners' mileage may vary. The Three Love Songs of Jean Coulthard (1908-2000) feature texts by Louis MacKay, who later moved to the U.S. and switched careers, becoming a classical philologist. These are graceful rhymed love songs in a compact Elgarian manner. At the other end of the chronological spectrum is the pair of songs by composer Iman Habibi, setting texts from the FitzGerald translations of Omar Khayyām and finding a distinctive simple language for those familiar texts. The theme of love recurs in the delightful Involuntary Love Songs of Jocelyn Morlock, who died in 2023 and to whom the album is dedicated. Jeffrey Ryan's Everything Already Lost, commissioned by the performers here, refers both to Schumann's Fantasie, Op. 17, and to Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte, Op. 98, which was quoted by Schumann. Baritone Tyler Duncan and pianist Erika Switzer have a strong rapport, although Duncan's voice shows strain on extended high notes or perhaps is just washed out by inadequate university recital hall sound. In any event, art song lovers -- and performers -- are certain to find something new and interesting here.
