About Playlist
Stephen Sondheim was an American composer and lyricist who continued to innovate the musical theatre genre for over 60 years. Sondheim began his Broadway career as the lyricist for West Side Story and Gypsy before handling both music and lyrics duties for 1962's A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum. In 1971, Sondheim received his first Tony Awards for Company, the first in a three-year run where dominated the Best Original Score category; Follies won in 1972 followed by A Little Night Music in 1973.
Though Sondheim's works could dark and complex (his only major commercial success was "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music, a huge hit for Judy Collins in 1975), his influence never suffered. He was a mentor to Lin-Manuel Miranda and more recent adaptions and stagings of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods helped cultivate a new generation of fans.
Sondheim died at the age of 91 on November 26, 2021.
