About Playlist
A tribute to Peter Eötvös. Composer and conductor Peter Eötvös was born on the 2nd of January 1944 in Transylvania (under Hungarian domination at the time) and spent his early childhood travelling, until the war ended. But this childhood was also guided by an early musical education that would lead the composer to excellence. As early as 1958, young Peter was spotted playing the organ at film screenings and later writing scores for plays. During his youth, Peter Eötvös was inspired by the great Hungarian composers such as Ligeti and Bartòk, but his curiosity made him a cosmopolitan musician who did not stop at the frontiers of sound. During his studies, he worked with his masters Stockhausen and Boulez, who did not hesitate to entrust him with the musical direction of the Ensemble InterContemporain from 1979 to 1991, a longevity unequalled to this day. Peter Eötvös has composed a large number of works of diverse nomenclature, from orchestral works to chamber music, electronic compositions and operas. Weakened by cancer for several months, Peter Eötvös left us with his musical genius on the 24th of March 2024, at the age of 80.
