About Playlist
1. Tchaikovsky - Symphony No 6, 1. Adagio - Allegro non troppo "I was lucky enough to see the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing this early in 2022; it's long been one of my favourite pieces of music but the simplicity (and beauty) of the main melody in the first movement was a huge source of inspiration during the writing of This New Noise." 2. Tchaikovsky - Symphony No 5, 2. Andante cantabile "One of the most beautiful openings to any piece of music ever written, followed by one of the most moving and perfect melodies, played first on the horn." 3. Mahler - Symphony No 5, 4. Adagietto "Again, I saw the BBC Symphony perform this piece and it's simply one of the most emotive and beautiful I've ever heard." 4. Strauss - Vier letzte Lieder - 4. Im Abendrot (please use the Jessye Norman / Kurt Masur recording) "This music soundtracked a major part of my time in Berlin while I was writing Bright Magic. I don't think anything compares to it - sweeping, majestic, heart-breaking." 5. Holst - The Planets Suite, III. Mercury (the winged messenger) "One of the more overlooked of The Planets pieces, or certainly not one of the big two, I actually incorporated an adapted version of the Mercury melody into our piece A Cello Sings in Daventry - the messenger seemed appropriate for a piece all about the power of broadcasting." 6. Mascagni - Cavalleria Rusticana (Intermezzo) "I first came across this (as did many) as the music used in Raging Bull, and then The Godfather Pt 3, before becoming a fan of the whole of the (short) opera. I don't really have the stomach for Wagner's long pieces but this is just right, and as an intermezzo this is possibly the most perfectly romantic music I've ever heard." 7. Gorecki - Symphony of Sorrow - first movement (Lento - Sostenuto etc) "The way this piece starts small, grows, becomes enormously moving before unwinding back down to double basses I'm sure had an influence on the final piece in This New Noise and the idea to remove layers of the orchestra (and have them leave the stage, too)." 8. Williams - Star Wars: A New Hope "The whole of this soundtrack has obsessed me for most of my life and, I'm sure, played a huge part in my love of big, powerful, sweeping melodies, the 'Binary Sunset' / Force Theme piece in particular. I think now John Williams is nearing the end of his career (and life, sadly) a lot of people are starting to be far less snobby about how good his music is, especially at conveying emotion." 9. Adams - Short Ride in a Fast Machine "JFAbraham sent this to me as part of a list of suggestions of classical music to listen to. The energy in it and the excitement was something I tried to take inspiration from, especially some of the percussive elements." 10. Reich - Music for 18 Musicians "This, performed at the Royal Festival Hall, was the first concert I saw in a long time after the break for the pandemic. It was playful, intricate and mesmerising." 11. Reich - New York Counterpoint "Another piece by Steve Reich, the pulsing clarinets in this piece inspired several elements of both Bright Magic and This New Noise, especially the movement of the wind sections in Broadcasting House." 12. Ravel - Daphnis and Chloe, Troisieme partie - Lever du jour "Another piece I had the privilege of watching the BBCSO play. One of the most thrilling crescendos in music, with exceptional woodwinds in particular throughout." 13. Debussy - La Mer - I. From Dawn Till Noon on the Sea "I think the way that classical composers often wrote very conceptual pieces has been a big source of inspiration for my musical life in general, but particularly Debussy and La Mer. " 14. Vaughan Williams Symphony No 5 - III. Romanza - Lento "I remember listening to Sir Simon Rattle being interviewed about performing this at the BBC Proms in 2021 (I think) and being moved to investigate further. I'm very glad I did." 15. Puccini - Turandot - Nessun Dorma "I'm sure those of us of a certain vintage remember this music with particular fondness / heartbreak, given its use soundtracking Italia '90, but it certainly helped ignite my love of romantic, classical music. What a melody." 16. Eno - An Ending (Ascent) "I'd put this firmly in the contemporary classical bracket; whatever the category, it's perfect, and again a big inspiration for the final piece." 17. Tchaikovksy - 1812 Overture "I cribbed some of the 1812 Overture for the end of A Candle Which Will Not Be Put Out and was quite edified to hear the orchestra saying it reminded them of it... it should've done! Powerful, thrilling, conceptual music." 18. Neu! - Isi "I wasn't just listening to classical music while writing This New Noise - Broadcasting House in particular owes a lot to Neu!'s pioneering, incredible work." 19. Paul Simon - Can't Run But "The same with this, too, the playfulness and the instrumentation are just fantastic." 20. Arvo Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel "So simple and so perfect." - J. Willgoose, Esq.
