About Playlist

The Qobuz ideal discography offers a wide selection of recordings particularly important in phonographic history, in all genres (operas, piano, baroque music, orchestra), depending on their availability naturally. Very great classics (Chopin's Valses by Lipatti, Ravel and Prokofiev's Concertos by Argerich, Strauss's Lieder by Schwarzkopf / Szell, Puccini's Bohemia by Pavarotti, Freni, Karajan) and others as essential but rarer (Mazurkas and Scriabin sonatas by Samuel Feinberg and Igor Zhukov, Gelber's Beethoven by Denon), or favourites related to particular repertoires. A splendid and fascinating discography that you can explore in detail if you definitely make the choice of the Qobuz streaming subscription.

Strauss & Kempe: Elective Affinities

by François Hudry, translated by Edward Maltby

The name of conductor Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976) is indissociable from those of composer Richard Strauss and the Dresden Staatskapelle orchestra. As Warner is now re-releasing the recordings made between 1970 and 1975, Qobuz is putting the spotlight on the Straussian legacy of a precise, often incisive conductor, who always paid the greatest attention to the text and its charms.

Concertante works and exceptional soloists

Aside from the universally-celebrated symphonic poems, this series of albums offers rarer concertante works: the Burleske for piano and orchestra performed by Malcolm Frager, the unfairly-overlooked Violin Concerto, Op. 8 by Ulf Hoelscher, the two horn concertos by Peter Damm, the charming Duet-Concertino for clarinet and bassoon with Manfred Weise on clarinet and Wolfgang Liebscher on bassoon, and the Oboe Concerto written at the end of his life and performed by Manfred Clement

We also find his strange Parergon zur Sinfonia Domestica, his first concerto written for piano left hand, written in 1924 for the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who commissioned similar materials from Ravel and Prokofiev. Unlike the dramatic, almost expressionist work of the French composer, Strauss' work ends in a grandiose and triumphant apotheosis, whereas Ravel concludes with an absolute negation. It is Peter Rösel's left hand which lends this work a feverish, virtuoso character. This latter also plays the second score, commissioned by Wittgenstein, who wasn't happy with the first, which didn't "showcase" him enough. Strauss would write him Panathenaenzug, Op. 74 three years later. Named for the feast honouring Athena (Panathenaea), these symphonic études are structured like a passacaglia over basso ostinato, with a long series of variations. These two scores are often criticised on the grounds that their gratuitous virtuosity makes them nothing more than a showcase for talent. That's a judgement that ought to be revised in the light of this sumptuous interpretation.

As for the Alpensinfonie and the Sinfonia Domestica, they are symphonies in name only. Vast symphonic poems, they also allow the conductor and his orchestra to carry out very subtle work on the sound, sublimating the demonstrative elements of the music. Rudolf Kempe twice recorded Don Quixote, first in 1958 with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with flamboyant cellist Paul Tortelier, one of the great representatives of the French cello school.

To discover more of Rudolf Kempe's art, take a look below at a few recordings made in concert, at the opera, or in studio. They bring out the same qualities of a musician of great integrity, whose modesty and kindness were legendary. We should add that a number of precious recordings by this great conductor were made live, and are now available. Heading up our selection, two luxurious full recordings of Ring by Wagner, recorded at Covent Garden and at Bayreuth, with the best singers of the time, and both available on Qobuz.
