About Playlist
We are quite familiar with the music composed for Alfred Hitchcock's films of the late 1950s and 1960s (The Wrong Man, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, The Birds, Marnie, and even Torn Curtain, between 1957 and 1966) and are surprised by its strong expressive power. They are due to the genius of Bernard Herrmann and are still vastly underrated because of his work in Hollywood, hindering the recognition of truly unique work in the American landscape of the 1940s-60s. Bernard Herrmann composed for the cinema, as he did for the concert, to such an extent that the borders between the two "genres" are hardly noticeable. His music for "Jane Eyre" is an extension or perhaps a "draft" of his beautiful opera "Wuthering Heights". When he composed for Psychosis in 1960, he looked back to his 1941 Sinfonietta, picking out certain motifs and developing them in a different way, but in reality the atmosphere of the 1960 work is already palpable in 1941. This 1941 Sinfonietta, which is a very personal score, recalls both Bartók's Divertimento (only created in 1940) and Vaughan Williams' 6th (completed in 1946).
This playlist offers a real immersion into the composer's universe, which allows us to (re)discover arguably three of his important works, the Symphony, the Quintet with clarinet, and the Sinfonietta, and to place his music for cinema alongside these scores that are still largely unknown. For the film music, we have chosen reinterpretations here (McNeely, Salonen, Herrmann himself), rather than the original, sometimes frustrating soundtracks.
In addition, a few testimonials from Herrmann as a conductor, which say a lot about his musical affinities; he was a great admirer of English composers, starting with Holst and Vaughan Williams.
