About Playlist

Welcome to the heart of the music of one of the greatest English composers, who displays a marked interest in oriental harmonies (Indra, Beni Mora), the foklorist heritage of the different regions of the United Kingdom (a little like Vaughan Williams, with different suites like the Saint Paul's Suite or the Brook Green Suite) as well as all the modern music of continental Europe (The Lure among others). Holst is above all a lyrical composer, always a melodist, who shows an avant-garde taste for repeating the same motifs, harmonies and rhythmic squares, sometimes strangely anticipating that certain aesthetic of the late 20th century (Bernard Herrmann, for example, was before the repetitions particularly influenced by the English composer, whom he loved!) This playlist deliberately excludes the iconic score, "The Planets", which we recommend listening to in James Levine's version with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Deutsche Grammophon, 1989), in order to immerse yourself in Gustav Holst's (1874-1934) multi-stylistic and always expressive world. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
