Picasso, when painting meets music

by Charlotte Saintoin

Picasso's modernist genius swiftly stretched beyond the pictorial and spread into music and dance, two art forms with which the Spanish painter always maintained a close relationship, to the point of influencing composer friends he met along the way.

Stravinsky, spiritual brother

Obsessed by myth, Picasso embarked upon his neoclassical period, which accompanied a desire for a kind of return to order. For the curtain of the ballet Le Train bleu by Cocteau (1924), Picasso reprised his 1922 painting Two Women Running on the Beach. But it is also through contact with the older and better-known Matisse that this idealised musicality came to occupy the canvas. Here it is synonymous with ecstasy and elevation, even the divine. Its refinement, which approaches perfection, fires the senses to trance and eroticism. Gone now are the guitars and mandolins: in bucolic settings, fauns, centaurs and men play the trumpet (Joie de Vivre, 1946), the tambourine (Woman with Tambourine, 1938), the cymbal (Fauns and Goat, 1959), the harp and the pan flute (The Triumph of Pan, 1944). Far from contemporary tragedies, Picasso was inspired by French classicism, Poussin and Ingres, and he nurtured his own mythology, which was then dominated by the Minotaur.

Stravinsky, whom Picasso met in Rome in 1917, curiously followed the same trajectory. The Russian composer, who wanted to break away from schools and styles, remains elusive. After the two successes of the Firebird (1911) and Petrushka (1913), Stravinsky created scandal with the brutal rhythms of the Rite of Spring (1913). Boulez: "The Rite of Spring serves as a point of reference to all who seek to establish the birth certificate of what is called contemporary music. A kind of manifesto work, somewhat in the same way and probably for the same reasons as Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon. […] It is in this sense that we can speak of the Rite as an essential simplification. It reduces the terms of a complex language and allows us to start again on new bases." Boulez would also speak of an "elaborate barbarism." Like Picasso, Stravinsky wanted to awaken the crowds with the shock of primitivism. While the Spaniard breaks down his pictures, the Russian does the same with his scores, fragmenting musical time and proceeding through ruptures. And with the ballet Pulcinella in 1919, Picasso, who was taking care of set design, dragged Stravinsky into his neoclassical period. The two artists enjoyed a mutual admiration until the composer's death in 1971, two years before that of the painter.
