Shahin Novrasli
Shahin Novrasli – born in Baku, Azerbaijan on February 10, 1977 – is a contemporary jazz pianist and composer. At the age of three, Novrasli discovered an early interest in music. Trained at the conservatory, he studied classical music and his first public performance was at the age of 11 at a symphonic concert at the Azerbaijan National Theater. Influenced by some of his favorite American pianists and fellow countryman Vagif Mustafazadeh, he switched his focus to jazz. In 1997, he began his international career, working solo as well as in trio, quartet and quintet formations. Mixing his classical roots with his jazz influences, he released two trio albums – Jz’Mu (2000) and Live in Moscow (2001) – before recording with a quartet and quintet. He met and became friends with one of his idols, Ahmad Jamal, who produced Novrasli’s albums Emanation (voted Best Jazz Album of 2017 by UK Vibe) and From Baku to New York City (2019).
