Sam Hill

Unlike a lot of contemporary bluegrass groups, Sam Hill values music over virtuoso talent. The Portland, OR, band avoids the trap of displaying speed and technique and gets to the heart of this mountain music, churning out a wealth of impressive, traditional-sounding originals each album. The group consists of songwriter/vocalist/mandolin player Jeff Smith, guitarist/vocalist Doug Sammons, bass player Dee Ann Davidshofer, fiddler/vocalist/songwriter Pat Kramer, and banjo player Peter Schwimmer. The group began in the early '90s. As their popularity grew, Sam Hill saw a few key members leave the fold, among them Smith's longtime musical ally Dave Chalupsky. Luckily, the addition of Kramer -- who came out of retirement to join Sam Hill -- and Schwimmer spurred the group on to new heights. In 2000, the popular neo-traditionalist singer Laurie Lewis recorded "Hard Luck & Trouble," the title track of Sam Hill's second CD (and a Smith composition). Sam Hill's third CD, Haunted By a Memory, was released in 2001.
