Mree
A self-produced singer and songwriter, Mree emerged in the late 2000s with a series of acoustic covers that won fans with her delicate, heartfelt performance style. She gradually added more complex, atmospheric production and original songs to the mix before presenting her self-produced full-length debut, Grow, in 2011. A social media endorsement from Bon Iver and song placements on prime-time television helped further her music's reach, and following two more albums, she made her Nettwerk Records debut with the EP Silver and Gold in 2017. Inspired more by meditation and mindfulness, the mostly instrumental Bloom EP arrived in 2010. Raised in New Jersey and based in Portland, Oregon, Marie Hsiao launched her singing career under the nickname Mree with a successful video channel. Gradually accumulating millions of streams, she put her soft-footed spin on songs originally by artists such as Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, and Imogen Heap in addition to standards like "Over the Rainbow," beginning in 2009. Her self-released debut album, Grow, made waves on the singer/songwriter streaming charts upon its release in 2011. A year later, bandleader Justin Vernon expanded her audience by sharing one of her Bon Iver covers on social media.Mree returned with the full-length Winterwell in 2013 and won an Independent Music Award for best music production the following year. In the meantime, her original song "Santa Catcher" was in a TV holiday ad campaign for a major retailer, and her songs began to appear on television series including Grey's Anatomy, Beauty and the Beast, and Bones. Her third album, Empty Nest, saw release in December 2015, and just three months later she and Henri Bardot debuted their indie folk project Perlo with the EP Patterns. A solo Mree returned in 2017 with the seasonal EP Silver and Gold, her Nettwerk Records debut. Another EP, The Middle, arrived in 2019, and sticking to the EP format, she delivered the more meditative Bloom in 2020.
