grentperez
Australian singer and songwriter grentperez is a lauded performer known for his breezy indie pop and throwback R&B-inspired sound. When he earned an APRA Award in 2024 in his native Australia for Emerging Songwriter of the Year, it was a culmination of all the musician had done thus far. Even before the release of his debut single “Cherry Wine” in 2021, he’d been winning over fans his contemporaries with diverse covers he’d upload online. Following a series of EPs, he delivered his full-length debut, 2025's Backflips in a Restaurant. Grant Perez was born in 2001 in Sydney, the youngest of three children raised by parents hailing from The Philippines. The happy memories of discovering his father’s favorite classic rock acts like The Beatles and Queen - as well as a knack for wowing family members at karaoke parties - would fuel his interest in doing more than just singing to a backing track. When he turned 12, he felt adept enough at guitar to start uploading videos of him covering his favorite songs at home; his popularity grew before and especially during the COVID-19 lockdowns, where his covers could amass view counts in the millions and eventually netted him more than a half million subscribers. In 2021, Perez signed to the local label Fast Friends and started issuing his first originals, like “Confusing Girl” (off the EP Demos About Love) and the strong standalone singles “Cherry Wine” and “Clementine.” The latter, a reference to Kate Winslet's character in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, summarized his overarching aesthetics as a songwriter: nostalgia for heady memories and the sonic signposts of his youth, from ‘90s and ‘00s film soundtracks that drew him in to undertones of bossa nova and Philly soul. More music followed in 2022, including EPs Conversations with the Moon (featuring “Cherry Wine,” “Clementine” and the moving title track) and Trail Mix Tape (featuring standouts “Wishful Thinking” and “Don’t Grow Up Too Fast”). His 2023 EP, When We Were Younger, generated enough interest to be distributed by AWAL outside of Australia, and 2024 single “Room for You,” a duet with Filipino-American singer Lyn Lapid, became Perez's first to chart in New Zealand. In March 2025, he released his full-length debut album, Backflips in a Restaurant. Along with indie-pop, it found him exploring a blend of '70s soft-rock, R&B, and Bossa Nova sounds. Featured on the album were guest spots from Benny Sings and Ruel. It reached number three on Australia's Aria Albums chart.
