David Grimal
Versatile violinist David Grimal has a repertory stretching from early music to newly commissioned works, including chamber music as well as solo pieces. He is also a significant educator, and he has presented concerts for the homeless population in Paris.
Grimal was born in 1973 in the Paris suburb of Châtenay-Malabry. His father was Nicolas Grimal, a well-known scholar studying ancient Egypt. He took up the violin at age five. David entered the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP), earning first prizes in violin and chamber music upon his graduation in 1993. Grimal went on for further studies with Régis Pasquier, and for master classes with Isaac Stern and Shlomo Mintz, among others. Several prizes propelled his growing career forward, including the European Culture Prize at the Musikverein in Vienna in 1996 and unusually early designation as Chevalier des Arts et Lettres by the French government in 2008. Grimal released his debut album on the Aeon label in 2004, joining pianist Valery Afanassiev in a program of Schubert sonatinas.
Grimal has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras both in France and abroad, including the Orchestre de Paris, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. He is the dedicatee of new works by composers such as Marc-André Dalbavie, Brice Pauset, and Thierry Escaich, but he also explores early music and historical performance styles in collaboration with such artists as fortepianists Andreas Staier, Mathieu Dupouy, and Maude Gratton. With the string quartet Les Dissonances, he also performs contemporary music. Grimal maintains the concert series L'Autre Saison at the Église Saint-Leu in Paris for and also benefiting the homeless. He has made more than 15 recordings as a soloist for the Aparté, Naïve, and most recently, La Dolce Volta labels, including two traversals of Bach's unaccompanied sonatas and partitas for solo violin; the second of these appeared on La Dolce Volta in 2023. Grimal is on the violin faculty at the Musikhochschule Saarbrücken in Germany.
