After records dedicated to Berlin in the 1930s, or to the Italy of La Dolce Vita, now Jonas Kaufmann is offering us some sugary Viennese delights, in keeping with the spirit of his 2014 album Du bist die Welt für mich, which covers German and Viennese operetta from 1925 to 1935. This new release rounds off an eternal and unchanging vision of an imagined Vienna. The net is cast wide, with works by Johann Strauss Jr., Robert Stolz and Franz Lehár, matched by pearls from lesser-known composers (Kalman, Zeller, Leopoldi, Weinberger, Benatzky, Kreuder, Georg Kreisler), who each bring their own stone to this monument to the great capital of music.
While you might catch yourself humming along to Wiener Blut with Jonas Kaufmann (here with Rachel Willis-Sørensen), this superbly put-together programme offers some pleasant surprises in the form of unknown airs. Most luxurious of all is the discreet, never-invasive accompaniment from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, in disguise here as an opulent "faubourg orchestra", most ably conducted by the Hungarian Adam Fischer. It's folk music of course, but sung with a supreme elegance and the technique of an opera singer at the height of their vocal and expressive powers. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Jonas Kaufmann in 10 Key Albums

With his flattering physique reminiscent of a handsome romantic, German Jonas Kaufmann has successfully modernised the image of opera tenors, long considered as unrepentant tumblers… Beyond his powerful and versatile voice, Jonas Kaufmann possesses an immense repertoire in several languages, masters all styles of opera, from Wagner to Verdi or Puccini, and sings the lied or the French opera to perfection. A great admirer of Fritz Wunderlich, he started his career “the old fashioned way”, in a company touring around small German theatres before taking off on his own towards a prodigious career. After a chaotic year in 2017 due to a ruptured blood vessel on his vocal chords, Jonas Kaufmann seems to have fully recovered and is working on countless new projects. Qobuz looks back on his career, highlighting 10 albums.

Nils Frahm, An Atypical Piano Master

Hailed by critics of classical music as well as amateurs of the electronic genre, Nils Frahm’s talent has brought harmony between the two worlds for the last ten years. Whether he plays on a church organ or a synthesiser fitted with effect pedals, the German pianist is always looking forward, and that’s what makes him so appealing.

Bruno Walter, Memories of a Departed Legend

Listening to Bruno Walter’s recordings, in light of the splendid remastered editions published by Sony Classical, you tap into a truly humanistic culture. A tremendous conductor, music was his vocation, a way of life and an art of thought. His recordings have conserved his art vocal music, intense but never sentimental, thanks to a clear linearity complemented by a versatile rhythm, ensuring clarity, coherence and vigour.
