Another marvel from England, on the label Voces8 Records who, a few months ago offered us one of the most beautiful recitals of vocal/choral music released in recent years with the opus After Silence. A member of the Voces8 Foundation and based in the Gresham Centre in the heart of the City of London, Apollo5 is a young a cappella vocal quintet often acclaimed for its commitment to the stage, and which performs a wide variety of repertoires, ranging from arrangements of classical pieces to pop music, retro jazz and Christmas carols. The diversity of the English choral tradition in all its splendour!
What a vocal quintet! In this album, which explores through old and more recent music, the question of joy and/or despair that can guide human love, the beauty of voices as well as phrasing, combined with the natural polyphonic clarity and precision of harmonies that this type of formation encourages, immerses you in an ocean of pure beauty!
A few examples. The first of Debussy's Trois chansons de Charles d'Orléans (Dieu! Qu'il a fait bon regarder), with its undoubtedly imperfect diction, but there is no doubt that one can take advantage of all the harmonic layering imagined by Claude de France. Or again the traditional Edo Lullaby, arranged by Paul Smith, with its hovering outfits, from which melodic waves of overwhelming nostalgia are elaborated (same goes for the finale The Last Rose of Summer... ). Apollo5 also pays homage to Gerald Finzi, through one of his Partsongs Op. 17, Haste on, My joys! A major piece on the album, a genuine two-minute gem, a sort of astonishing kaleidoscope of musical history, at the same time Renaissance madrigal, Bach chorale with somewhat disruptive harmonies, a veritable "partsong" in the lineage of Stanford with influences from Vaughan Williams. With its small size, Apollo5 here revels in the friction and multi-stylistic character of Finzi's writing.
