This is a unique collection from one of Argentina's most famed musical exports--Astor Piazzolla, the composer and iconoclast who single-handedly re-invented tango music during the latter half of the 20th century. What distinguishes VUELVO AL SUR from Piazzolla's other exceptional recordings (TANGO: ZERO HOUR, for example, is required listening) is the spotlight on vocalist Roberto Goyeneche, who, like Piazzolla, made a name for himself reinterpreting tango from the traditional mode. Goyeneche's expressive baritone is featured prominently on the title track, written for the soundtrack to the 1988 film SUR by Fernando Solanas.
Piazzolla's innovative instrumentation is spotlighted, with groupings of double bass, electric or acoustic guitar, violin, cello, piano and, of course, the evocative, melancholic sound of the composer's bandoneon. Swirling, dramatic compositions "Libertango" and "Tanguedia III" are highlights. Passionate and moving, with a sound that has roots in European tradition, South American folk, and modern avant-garde, Piazzolla's music simultaneously challenges and appeals. This 2004 release is a significant addition to the tango master's discography.
