Before releasing this first album, Coi Leray was a viral musical sensation. After all, her youth and fresh perspective made for very instagrammable content. She was destined for a beautiful career and Trendsetter seems to have really kicked it off. She didn’t hold back any punches, getting the big guns out with a list of prestigious guests: A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Lil Tecca, Lil Durk, Fivio Foreign, Lil Baby, Polo G… A fearsome army with a presence so strong it may as well be a second protagonist on this album. Coi Leray isn’t afraid to explore, experimenting with nostalgic RnB aesthetics on Hollywood Dreams, Nigerian sounds on Aye Yai Yai and acid pop tracks on TWINNEM, as you might expect from the album cover. On the production side, there’s another list of contributors in which one name really stands out: Diego Ave. With these huge names, it’s almost impossible for this young rapper to fail. She draws inspiration from Young Thug’s flow on No More Parties as well as drill rhythms on Thief of the Night. Trendsetter is technically masterful, a blockbuster of an album that’s been expertly designed to be a devilishly effective launch pad for Leray’s career. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
