Tree63 is a power pop, praise trio that hails from Durban, South Africa. The band formed in 1996 and has garnered number one hits in their own country on Christian radio, while also reaching number two on the mainstream charts. The band's first U.S. release is a conglomeration of infectious melodies, rock-solid riffs, and captivating lyrics. The disc's opener is a bold introduction to the band. "Treasure" offers the listener looping drums, and guitars and bass that are tightly woven in the pocket. Like the entire disc, the lyrics are candid and insightful. "Take the world up out of me/put the fruit back on the tree/I'd give everything to be/What only YOU want me to be." "Joy" is a pure, feel-good vibe. Guitarist John Ellis plays a super chunky rhythm, while dynamically the song takes you on a grand amusement ride. Along the line of Delirious, "Look What You've Done" is an example of alternative worship. The tune is a showcase for the vocals of Ellis, who crafts a heartfelt melody. Equally engaging is the song "Anthem." Drummer Daryl Swart utilizes the floor toms well, while bringing the tune to a pinnacle at mid-stream. The cut features a chorus that is delivered from the heavens with all out conviction and fervor. "A Million Lights" went to number two on the mainstream charts in South Africa. The cut is pure rock craftsmanship leaning toward the guitar work of U2's the Edge and the vocal excellence of Sting. Tree63 is an articulate three-piece unit. Pound for pound they deliver in every category. Each member renders superb background vocals and musicianship, while pounding out killer grooves with worshipful melodic heft.
