It's hard to resist Matthew Sweet's updated take on straightforward power pop, especially given Sweet's undeniable knack for crafting solid, memorable tunes. In addition to the heavy influence of the Beatles, Big Star, and countless '60s jangle-pop bands, Sweet incorporated the heavy edge of '90s alternative rock into his music, resulting in a hook-heavy concoction that sounded fresh and utterly familiar at once.
TIME CAPSULE: THE BEST OF MATTHEW SWEET compiles 16 highlights from across Sweet's discography, and includes two new tracks--"Ready" and "So Far"--both of which feature stomping rhythms married to Sweet's trademark high-flown melodies. The majority of the disc is devoted to representing Sweet's best albums, namely 1991's GIRLFRIEND (his finest moment), 1993's ALTERED BEAST, and 1995's 100% FUN, while skimming the cream from his other releases. It all makes for a terrifically fun listen, and stands as a compelling retrospective of the work of this contemporary popmeister.
