The Osokin piano-playing family is a veritable Latvian dynasty: the father, Sergejs and his two sons Andrejs and Georgijs have given us a record that offers pretty comprehensive coverage of a century of their country's piano music, the two founders of which were Jānis Zālītis (1884-1943) and Jānis Ivanovs (1906-1983) – little-known in France, it's true – running up to Jāzeps Vītols (1863-1948) and above all Pēteris Vasks (born 1946) whose fame has by now spread around the world. Note also that in order to avoid raising a clan of clones, Sergejs insisted that while his sons might have started playing piano with him, they had to study the instrument far from the bosom of the family. And so Andrejs studied at London's Royal Academy, Georgijs at the Juilliard School in New York: it was a very fitting way of ensuring that both musicians would find their own path. This album, while bringing the family back together, still showcases each member's unique style and unique choice of works. © SM/Qobuz
