Godfather of the “British Invasion” phenomenon, master of English blues and the guy who discovered the likes of Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor… John Mayall isn’t ready to sit back and enjoy his retirement just yet. Whilst other younger musicians are struggling to reinvent themselves or find new inspiration, at 88, John Mayall just keeps going, accompanied by a top-notch rhythm section that’s been playing with him for over a decade. While the sound is very professional and clean, it doesn’t diminish Mayall’s individual sound; his songs continue to convey a true love of blues and rhythm'n'blues with the usual keyboard and occasional brass section. This album is classic John Mayall, but it’s enhanced by the excellent work of the guest musicians whose guitar mastery makes for some incredible solos. Marcus King on Can’t Take No More, Mike Campbell on Chills and Thrills, and the amazing Carolyn Wonderland (already featured multiple times on the previous album Nobody Told Me) on The Sun is Shining Down all play their part in creating an absolute belter of an album. Sometimes, you have to be your own best advocate, and Mayall even allows himself to cover one of his own tracks, providing a new version of his Deep Blue Sea. It still includes the violin and, more than 50 years later, it sounds as good as ever. He hasn’t come back to turn things on their head, he’s just enjoying making music and continuing his legacy of incredible success. There’s no doubt that the sun’s still shining on John Mayall's music career. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
