The catalog is brimming with superlative recordings of Grieg's Peer Gynt Suites from the monaural, stereo, and digital eras. This offering sets itself apart by pairing that popular standard with eight of Grieg's songs for voice and orchestra. Bjarte Engeset and the Malmö Symphony may be out-gunned by some bigger named conductor-orchestra combinations, but their performances here are still strong, energetic, and colorful. More importantly, the performances of the eight songs by Inger Dam-Jensen and Palle Knudsen are nearly as good as it gets in these much less familiar works. Dam-Jensen's clear, vibrant soprano is heartbreaking in "Solveig's Cradle Song," while Knudsen's big, virile baritone is heart-swelling in the ballade Henrik Wergeland. Engeset and the Malmö Symphony provide competent accompaniments. So, while the Grieg shopper looking for a Peer Gynt has many other choices, and many better ones than this, the inclusion of the songs makes this otherwise middle-of-the-road recording stand out. Produced by Morten Mogensen and engineered by Erik Nielsen, Naxos' 2006 digital sound, though not particularly warm, is sharp, colorful, and detailed.

Women Composers: A Secret History

From Sappho of Mytilene to Kaija Saariaho, music history has been marked by female figures who “dared” to write music. Is creation a male privilege? Our sound museum does hold more well-known and recognised male than female composers. Yet their works are no less exciting and there is absolutely no reason for them to play second fiddle, or be ignored altogether. Below, you’ll find a defence and illustration of female composition works through eleven musical portraits.

Martha Argerich: The Untameable Pianist

For over 60 years the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich has amazed audiences all over the world with her wild, impulsive playing and her constant risk-taking, overcoming every technical difficulty by turning each of her performances into a fascinating journey.

The British Blues Boom, Chronicle of a Revolution

If Joe Bonamassa has come back with British Blues Explosion, a year after the Rolling Stones’ Blue And Lonesome, it has cemented the fact that the British Blues Boom was more than just a trend. More than a simple musical trend, it was the interest of a younger generation for the great American blues idols that had been ignored in their country, which led to a real revolution, with three major agitators leading the charge, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, considered in the UK as the “Holy Trinity” of rock and guitar. If they were far from being the only musicians involved, it is through their respective careers that we have discovered that blues, far from being an outdated musical genre, is some kind of getaway to other musical areas and has allowed for endless innovations.
