If this opera is a rarity outside of the Poland which gave birth to it, Halka by the father of Polish opera, Stanisław Moniuszko, is in the repertoire of its country of origin, but known only in the corrected version of 1858. This album, recorded in concert in the wake of Krakow's Opera Rara Festival, presents for the first time the original 1848 version, which is more interesting in its elements and concentrated drama.

This popular opera tells the sad story of a young mountain girl in love with Janusz, an aristocrat who seduces her, fathers a child on her, and then abandons her to marry Zofia, a young woman of his own social class. Desperate, Halka does not accept the break-up, loses her child and refuses the love of her childhood friend Jontek, who is passionately in love with her. There follows a long wandering in the Tatras where an hallucinating Halka, after having initially considered setting fire to the church during the wedding ceremony, gives up her incendiary project and prefers to commit suicide... This confrontation of the social classes is an excellent pretext for Moniuszko to use the melodies and dances extracted from popular traditions, such as the mazurka, the polonaise and the dumka.

Composed in 1846 in the wake of the 'People's Spring' after the Krakow Uprising, Halka soon became the standard-bearer for the Polish uprising against Russia. An essential work in the Polish repertoire, it here benefits from a first-rate cast and the excellence of the Capella Cracoviensis, one of the best "historically aware" ensembles in Poland today. This ensemble, consisting of a choir and an orchestra, has performed successfully at the most important festivals with such renowned guest conductors as Evelino Pido, Christophe Rousset, Paul Goodwin and Paul McCreesh. Moniuszko's first opera, Halka, is nonetheless a masterpiece. It is replete with romantic melodies and harmonies following in the tradition set by Auber and Donizetti, and would be a worthy inclusion in the repertoire of all opera companies. © François Hudry/Qobuz
