Benzin is certainly not Reznicek's best-known opera; indeed posterity has only retained in full the overture of Donna Diana, of the twenty four operas he wrote between 1887 and 1935. It's even less well-known that while Benzin was written in 1929, it wasn't to be performed in public until… 2010, and here is the recording of this discographic world first. Yes, yes, Benzin means "fuel", and that's exactly what it's about: a Zeppelin, running low on fuel, touches down on an unknown island which, devil knows why, is full of fuel, but ruled over by a mysterious American millionaire who has the wicked habit of hypnotising the men and making them believe themselves to be animals. Charming! But the captain isn't so easily beguiled, and, aided by the love of a beautiful woman, all's well that ends bawdily. Reznicek borrows from all the styles going, making for a 100% delirious potpourri ranging from Wagner to Strauss, from Mahler to foxtrot, tango, music-hall and the exoticism of the World Exhibition. The listener is thrown like a ping-pong ball through everything that was going on in 1929, one year after the opening of a regular transatlantic Zeppelin line, which inspired the opera – and it is hard to resist the work's energetic humour. Of course, the audience needs to understand the German... But perhaps a French producer with enough imagination will soon put on this little gem over here. © SM/Qobuz
