  • Est-ce parce qu’il a écrit rien moins que 68 quatuors que l’on oublie presque de les écouter ? Mais cette stupéfiante production haydnienne ne signifie en rien qu’il ait « dilué » sa musique dans un grand nombre d’ouvrages du même genre ; au contraire, connaissant Haydn, cela signifie qu’il a exploré, encore exploré, toujours exploré, expérimenté, tenté, lancé, de sorte que Mozart, Beethoven puis Schubert n’ont eu qu’à se servir, puisque toutes les portes étaient ainsi ouvertes.
        Le premier volume de cette anthologie nous donne trois quatuors : l’un de la première grande période (1770), le second de l’époque de vitesse de croisière à Esterházy (1785), le dernier de l’ultime maturité en free-lance (1793). Et l’on comprend comment Haydn évolue du Sturm und Drang, classique post-baroque, jusqu’au premier romantisme à la Beethoven.
        Aux quatre manches, le Quatuor Schuppanzigh « nouveau modèle », puisque le premier quatuor du même nom fut fondé en 1796 ; mais l’actuel ensemble utilise néanmoins des instruments d’époque, joués selon les modes de jeu historiques. Il est à remarquer que le quatuor initial créa bon nombre de quatuors de Beethoven et de Schubert, ce qui n’est pas une mince carte de visite.
