This version of Purcell’s iconic opera recorded in 1961 by Decca’s star producer Ray Minshull is a true musical artefact. It seems to have come from the depths of time with its Pleyel harpsichord, heavy strings, slow tempo and slack gestures. Its main asset is its ability to display the immense Janet Baker as a tearful and particularly moving Dido. Anthony Lewis’ direction also provides us with a clearer idea of how baroque interpretations have evolved in the time between this distant period and today. These first efforts paved the way for Raymond Leppard’s exhilarating display in his interpretation of Cavalli’s Monteverdi at Glyndebourne. The door was then opened to a new generation of musicologist/musicians and organologists who would strive to rediscover interpretive styles through examining an era’s traits and playing methods on old or recreated instruments. This vast historically-informed interpretive movement has since proved its worth and invigorated a repertoire that goes much further than just the baroque period. © François Hudry/Qobuz
