No need to enquire about a first name : Poldowski is one of those pseudonyms like Voltaire, Bansky or Boz that remain set apart by their singularity. In the case of composer Poldowski, the issue is rather unusual since she happens to be Régine Wieniawski, daughter of the famous violinist Henryk Wieniawski, and if she had wanted to assert feminity in her name, she might have chosen Poldowska… At any rate, Régine never knew her father – who died when she was a babe in arms – and was never under his musical influence; as a matter of fact, influences might be found in the area of her contemporary Debussy, in particular as regards her considerable repertoire in the field of artsongs – several of which are in French, with texts by Verlaine (whom she knew quite well), while her English artsongs have chosen Blake among others for literary sources. Poldowski was a great socialite, all the more once she had married Sir Aubrey Dean Paul, 5th Baronet, thus becoming Lady Dean Paul; amongst her acquaintances and supporters Malcolm Sargent, Henry Wood and Thomas Beecham were some of the staunchest and several of her orchestral works were performed by these distinguished conductors. However, a great deal of her music remains unknown, whether lost or just forgotten in some library, and awaits rediscovery; four of the artsongs on this album are world premiere recordings. By way of musical references, soprano Angélique Zuluaga has inserted a selected few songs by Reynaldo Hahn, Claude Debussy and Louis Aubert, composed around the same period. It is really about time that Poldowski’s music is seriously reasserted and promoted. © SM/Qobuz
