The keyboard music of Peter Philips is sometimes played, but his choral music is less often heard. Still less common is the music of Richard Dering. The reasons for the neglect of these two composers, a generation after Byrd, is not clear, for the works here are compelling. It may have to do with the way Philips and Dering, Catholics both, dealt with the religious dramas of the Elizabethan era: they simply checked out and fled to the Catholic Low Countries, so their stories never became part of the dominant musical narratives of the time. Their sojourns also exposed them to the new musical winds blowing from Italy, involving styles of which their English late Renaissance contemporaries were mostly unaware. The result was a unique stylistic fusion. Consider the eight-part motet Ecce vicit Leo of Philips (or Ave Jesu Christe, which is similar). This opposes two choirs in the manner of the Giovanni Gabrieli and the Italian polychoral school, all without losing the flavor of English polyphony; it is an imposing combination. Other works draw on the highly detailed text setting of the Italian madrigal. The music is accompanied by the instrumental ensemble In Echo; this may have occurred at various times, but it is especially appropriate in this repertory. Appropriate, too, is the substantial choir size of 24, eschewing fashionable one-voice-per-part trends and fitting the imposing nature of the music. There are also instrumental pieces that receive sharp performances from In Echo, and the Linn label's sound from Holy Trinity Minchinhampton church in England's Gloucestershire region is idiomatic. This is a major Renaissance release that may rewrite the general repertory a bit.
