A major composer of the Spanish Golden Age, a period graced by the art of Velasquez and the passionate writings of Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross, however Tomás Luis de Victoria remains the greatest polyphonist of the Spanish Renaissance. Jordi Savall had already dedicated an award-winning album to him in 1991 with the Cantica Beatae Virginae. With his trusty singers and musicians of the Capella Reial de Catalunya and the ensemble Hespèrion XXI, Jordi Savall gives us here a sombre and very inward-looking version of the towering Officium Hebdomadæ Sanctæ, recorded at two concerts given at the 2018 Salzburg Festival. Published in 1585, it is the first major composition by the Spanish composer while he was Kapellmeister and organist in Rome.

Still imbued with the austerity of Palestrina, discovered by Victoria in the Eternal City, this collection covers the whole of Holy Week with Responses, Passions, Lamentations and other Hymns, punctuated by the use of Gregorian chant, which gives a thread of continuity to this immense structure that runs to nearly three and a half hours of music that are full of rare expressive power.

This very complex work has an incredible polyphonic richness whose harmonic colours reach an incandescent intensity. With its dark colours and its gradual movement towards a final plenitude, Jordi Savall's ambitious project is quite successful and sumptuously enhanced by the sound engineers who have performed a real miracle in reproducing the fine grain of the voices as well as the sound of the instruments. © François Hudry/Qobuz
