Between 2014 and 2018, Migos ravaged everything in their path. Now, two-thirds of the major Atlanta band is coming together for an album that’s a bit off the beaten track—a welcome digression, since they sometimes rehash the trap formula a little too often. There’s none of that here. Only Built for Infinity Links heads off in different directions for the most part, showing that Quavo and Takeoff are just as comfortable with new musical beats. Of course, their signature trap sound is still there, particularly on tracks like ‘Messy’ (with DJ Durel’s reverse production) and ‘Us vs. Them’ featuring Gucci Mane. However, when they decide to venture away from their home turf, the two rappers still know how to amaze their listeners. There are incredible melodic odes like ‘To the Bone’ with NBA YoungBoy and the amazing ‘Chocolate’, featuring Young Thug and Gunna, on which DJ Durel lends his magic touch. These two lifelong friends know how to navigate the darkness and reach the light; they can go from a dark track like ‘Not Out’ and move straight onto the tasty ‘Mixy’, a trio with singer Summer Walker. With Only Built For Infinity Links, Quavo and Takeoff have perhaps put forward their most labyrinthine full length yet, however, they never lose their way or deny their status as sacred gods of trap.
