The second full-length from Oakland underground hero Del the Funky Homosapien was a leaner, meaner detour from the comparatively lighthearted Native Tongues-adjacent charm of his debut album I Wish My Brother George Was Here. But No Need for Alarm is less a sophomore slump than a step up that permanently shifted Del's rep: from here on out, he'd make his name as a clever, word-bending geek-culture brainiac who lived to end the whole career of any rival MC who dared to be wack in his presence. Rapping-about-rapping showcases dominate the album, and few underground rappers of his era were as dedicated to showing-by-telling as Del here. The first four cuts make for one of its era's most unrelenting salvos of battle-ready trash-talk lyricism, with the undercurrent that, per the "I yearn to make rap better, let's stick together" verse-ender in "You're in Shambles" and the recurring idea that the truest victory over one's rivals is to make them step their game up, it intrinsically feels just as much like a steel-sharpens-steel encouragement of his peers to bring some real competition. (And some real camaraderie—this is ground zero for the emergence of the Hieroglyphics collective, represented in part by the Souls of Mischief crew, rapper-producer Casual, and beatmaker Domino.) It's one thing to endure a litany of skill-flaunting boasts, but it's next-level to hear that delivered in his taunting, trickster-sly voice. Imagine the conversational-yet-complex elaboration of De La Soul's Posdnous filtered through the cartoon wisenheimer needling of Bugs Bunny, where he steamrolls you with intricately constructed, manic-flowing punchlines ("I just dissect the mic/ And correct the tykes so don't be sassy/ You won't be lasting, chastising that's why things/ Swing in my favor, watch your behavior!") before rubbing it in with a brain worm hook ("you wack MCs!"). All that's left is for the collective-effort beats to give him something to bounce off, and the jazzy, dusty-crate boom-bap production is laced with just enough Cali panache to place its sound high enough into the stratosphere to span both coasts. © Nate Patrin/Qobuz
