Jacksonville, Florida rapper SpotemGottem broke through massively with his viral hit "Beat Box." The song was unrelentingly bold, powerful, and surprisingly catchy despite its raw production and ruthless lyrical threads. A remix featuring Pooh Sheisty appeared on his 2020 mixtape Final Destination, and Sheisty's verse intensified the tense atmosphere of the original. The attention SpotemGottem gained from "Beat Box" led to a contract with Geffen affiliate label Rebel Music, and his 12-track mixtape Most Wanted is the first music since the rapper made the move from independent to major-label artist. He tries on several new styles to varying degrees of success throughout the project. The enormous bass hits, skeletal instrumentals, and threat-heavy lyrics of songs like "Big Ass Chain," and the infectiously mean "No Tik Tok" follow the blueprint of "Boom Box." There's even another remix of SpotemGottem's biggest hit, this time featuring DaBaby. During the course of his verse, DaBaby's nonstop barrage of salacious punchlines and larger-than-life energy transform the song from the original creeping catchiness into something viscerally exciting. It's easily one of the strongest moments on Most Wanted, but SpotemGottem's verses on the song can't help but come off a little lackluster following a performance so overflowing with confidence and personality. Hit and miss attempts at different styles give the tape an inconsistent feel. The introspective, emotionally reflective tone of the sung/rapped "Freestyle" connects, but a similar approach on "Choppa Love" feels unfinished. SpotemGottem's stabs at melody (like the somewhat awkward soul-bearing of "All in a Row" or "Lost Souls") don't gel with his more puffed-up bangers, leaving Most Wanted the kind of collection where listeners return to the highlights while skipping the rest.
