Terry Riley's In C (1964) consists of 53 short musical phrases, to be played by an indeterminate number of performers who may repeat a phrase or move on but should try to stay within a few phrases of each other. It has been performed in many ways, but the work has received a fresh reading from avant-garde cellist Maya Beiser. She plays the work herself, with just her cello and a looping device, accompanied by a pair of percussionists laying out the specified tempo of 120 beats per minute. The loops enable a striking variety of sounds, ranging from meditative patterns to rock-like shredding to a Baroque pulse, and anyone who has claimed minimalist music is dull should really hear Beiser's take on Riley's work. She does add an electronic aspect to a piece that did not have one originally, but she leaves plenty of room for her own cello in an acoustic and even a lyric guise. It is an appropriate way to mark the work's 60th anniversary year, and one will be interested to hear what Riley himself thinks of it, should he decide to weigh in.
