Quite a few young composers are contending for the British crossover crown held by John Rutter, and with this setting of familiar sacred texts, Matthew Coleridge makes a strong claim. The album includes not only a setting of the Requiem mass for chorus, solo cello, and orchestra, but also some smaller pieces in a similarly meditative mood. Indeed, Coleridge states that he did not set out to compose a Requiem mass but that the pieces fell together over time. Perhaps the highlights are the shorter pieces. Most of the music is in Latin, but sample the English-language treatments of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis at the end. Coleridge has also composed electronic and ambient music, and that seems to show in these settings, which build up reverential layers of sound from simple opening blocks. The Requiem has been performed across the U.K., and it is easy to see why: it offers fetching melodies that stay in the mind, and the touch of sentiment applied by the Choir of Royal Holloway under Rupert Gough brings out the best in the work. Gough nicely balances the choir with the Southern Sinfonia in the acoustic of the Christchurch Priory in Coleridge's native Dorset. This album appears to be finding the crossover audience to which it is perfectly suited; it appeared on classical best-seller charts in early 2023.
