Son of Alfred How Green Was My Valley Newman, nephew of Lionel (Hello Dolly) Newman and Emil (Guadalcanal Diary) Newman, and cousin of Randy (Toy Story) Newman, Thomas Newman is the youngest member of a film music dynasty. And with such diverse credits as the scores to Desperately Seeking Susan, The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, and Finding Nemo to his credit, he is clearly no lesser a member of that dynasty. With this score to Todd Field's Little Children from 2006, Newman has used some of his familiar touches -- the fascination with exotic percussion instruments, the predilection for moody piano musings, the inclination toward motivic fragmentation -- and added the sweep of a big string orchestra plus the haunting sound of an alto flute to create a wholly original sonic world that admirably matches the tone of Field's film. Indeed, Newman's score is in some ways an improvement on the film in that it is more cogent, more propulsive, and more convincingly dramatic than Field's sometimes ironic, sometimes erotic, sometimes neurotic, sometimes sadistic film. Conducted by Newman, performed by an orchestra of first-class studio players on 20th Century Fox and Paramount's Scoring Stage "M" and produced by Newman with Bill Bernstein, Little Children is another feather in Newman's cap.
