What's presented here is not a single work, but it's not really a vocal recital either. La Storia di Orfeo is a pastiche, a new, little, hour-long Orpheus opera assembled from works on the subject by Monteverdi, Luigi Rossi, and Antonio Sartorio. The good news is that countertenor Philippe Jaroussky is in fine voice, and Swiss conductor Diego Fasolis' I Barocchisti ranks among his most accomplished accompanimental groups. Both Jaroussky and the ensemble effectively shift among the various styles here, covering nearly 70 years of musical change. The problem for the casual listeners is that these changes tend to disrupt the musical flow, although Jaroussky has obviously put a good deal of effort into minimizing this effect. It's the in the pieces by the little-known Antonio Sartorio, from a 1672 L'Orfeo, that this is most noticeable; going in the other direction, to Caccini's Euridice, might have been a better idea. For lovers of 17th century opera, however, this is an intriguing program of mostly unfamiliar music, beautifully sung and played.
