For those who are feeling the lack of new releases from Rammstein or even the Oomph! and don't know where to get their fix: palliatives exist. This movement, rather pompously dubbed “Neue Deutsche Härte” (“New German Hardness” – seriously?) took off around 20 years ago, and was never really “new”: there are a handful of groups that a pharmacist could prescribe you as a generic treatment. They run from the higher dosages, like Ost+Front, to less-concentrated solutions, almost placebo drugs, like Unheilig... Megaherz sits somewhere between the two, the veteran outfit having tried a variety of different approaches following the release of their début album Herzwerk, in 1995. They started out with something of a fusion sound, but later took a turn into industrial metal, oscillating between tanzmetall (or dance metal, another rather dubious term as it's not exactly suitable for discos) and more accessible electro pop. It's worth noting that none of the original line-up remains.

Having taken a harder tone on their last two productions, Megaherz has opened up to new possibilities on this tenth album, which moves between the extremes with ease, favouring a massive sound, which doesn't mean a sound bereft of finesse. Melodic and poppy on Von Oben, Heldengrab, groove metal on Horrorclown or Schwarz Oder Weiß, heavy electro on Scherben bringen Glück, industrial hard rock on Komet and Tiefenrausch, the Munich group can't really be mistaken for their Berlin competitors, except on a couple of tracks (Vorhang Auf,  Nicht Genug...). It wouldn't be right to paint them with the same brush as anyone singing in German against a metal backdrop of big guitars and martial rhythms: Megaherz don't just follow the herd. Here, they are building a bridge between Rammstein and Killing Joke or White Zombie... After all, their impressive singer Lex Wohnhaas sounds more like Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke) or Al Jourgensen (Ministry) than like Till Lindemann. The group also owes a lot to the varied and slick work of Christian "X-Ti" Bystron who acquits himself just as well on the ultra-heavy guitars that he shares with Christoph "Chris" Klinke. Another non-negligible attraction here is the gift the band have for choruses that can worm their way into your cortex. For those who are new to Megaherz, Komet is as good a place as any to start. © Jean-Pierre Sabouret/Qobuz
