The warmth of Stan Getz's saxophone sound is unique in jazz history. A great expressiveness and a rainbow of tones that reached from the softest tenderness to the most assertive vigour have always been a constant for this West Coast jazz virtuoso who has always been good at picking his sidemen. This double album brings together tracks recorded between 1948 and 1952, when he was only twenty years old. Alongside Getz are masters such as guitarist Jimmy Raney, pianists Duke Jordan, Al Haig and Horace Silver and double bass players Tommy Potter and Percy Heath. Between them, they trace the contours of an emerging post-bop. We also feel Getz beginning to assert himself aesthetically more and more, moving away from his idol, Lester Young. With less flamboyance than is often found in bebop, Getz's cool, unique style simmers sensuously on a theme like Thanks For the Memory. No wonder Getz was such an immensely popular artist well beyond the circles of jazz lovers... © Marc Zisman / Qobuz
