It’s now been almost fifteen years that producer, composer, arranger, and DJ Carlos Niño has been inventing and crafting music from his synthesizers and percussion kit that’s unlike any other, making way for avant-garde arrangements that are at once minimalist, repetitive, and paradoxically luxurious within the confines of cosmic jazz, ambient, and new music styles inspired by new age and experimental hip hop. On the 18 tracks of this new album, Carlos Niño, surrounded as always by an array of guests coming from every stylistic direction, offers up both the synthesis and quintessence of his work. Gliding along as if in a waking dream, long, contemplative, floating tracks serve as vessels for V.C.R’s spoken word poetry or Kamasi Washington’s saxophone. Elegiac sequences rife with exquisite tones mix electronic and acoustic instruments over a pulsing foundation of deliciously silky, hallucinatory grooves. Across the tracks, Niño, who has a consummate sense of casting, puts on a parade of artists, as diverse as guitarist Nate Mercereau, keyboardist and protégé of Alice Coltrane, Surya Botofasina, the legend that is the AACM Maia, electronic music producer Photay, New York experimental musician Deantoni Parks, as well as André 3000 (on the flute!), without compromising the overall coherence of the music amidst such eclecticism.
