To have written that, you must be a poet, Massenet told Reynaldo Hahn when he read through the score of L’Île du rêve. Composed when the young man was not yet eighteen years old, this ‘curtain-raiser’ already had the qualities of the great works of the period. It reveals the coloristic talents of Bizet, the passionate outbursts of Massenet and even the prosodic originality of the young Debussy.
The plot recounts a French naval officer’s love affair with a young Polynesian girl he has to abandon. This subject - also treated musically by Puccini (Madama Butterfly) and Delibes (Lakmé - is approached in an almost Symbolist style: the Romanticism of the music contrasts with a contemplative, introspective treatment of the narration. This is where the youthful Hahn particularly shines: in the very first bars (the hymn to Bora-Bora), in the various love scenes for Loti and Mahenu (notably the duet "Restons encore les paupieres mi-closes") and even in the neo-Handelian prelude to Act Two. © Bru Zane

In your panoramas...
Bruno Walter, Memories of a Departed Legend

Listening to Bruno Walter’s recordings, in light of the splendid remastered editions published by Sony Classical, you tap into a truly humanistic culture. A tremendous conductor, music was his vocation, a way of life and an art of thought. His recordings have conserved his art vocal music, intense but never sentimental, thanks to a clear linearity complemented by a versatile rhythm, ensuring clarity, coherence and vigour.

Herbert Von Karajan and The Grand Masters of Classical Music

30 years after his death, the Austrian Herbert von Karajan (Salzbourg 1908 – Anif 1989) still embodies the musical conductor like no other. In charge of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years (1955-1989), Karajan helped to elevate the orchestra to a level of global prestige. Throughout his career, he methodically diversified his repertoire: from Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner to Verdi, Wagner and Strauss…

Strauss & Kempe: Elective Affinities

The name of conductor Rudolf Kempe (1910-1976) is indissociable from those of composer Richard Strauss and the Dresden Staatskapelle orchestra. As Warner is now re-releasing the recordings made between 1970 and 1975, Qobuz is putting the spotlight on the Straussian legacy of a precise, often incisive conductor, who always paid the greatest attention to the text and its charms.
