The title of this recital by the Francoise-Green Piano Duo, Antoine Francoise and Robin Green, is less gnomic than it may appear. The "games" are piano duet selections from Játékok (Games), a multi-book set of short piano pieces by György Kurtág; the chorales are all by Bach as arranged for piano, four-hands or for two pianos by Kurtág, and the fantasy is the well-known Fantasie in F minor, D. 940, of Schubert. These make a relatively cohesive recital, with the Kurtág pieces both referring to Bach (and not only in the Hommage à J.S.B., which makes a good place to begin sampling or to begin in general with the work of this composer) and fitting in an indefinable way with the Schubert Fantasie. The Kurtág Prelude and Waltz that immediately precedes the Schubert seems to define registral space in a similar way, and Kurtág's own pieces benefit from bumping up against the Bach-Kurtág arrangements. It all makes for a rather intellectual hour of music that befits the duo's hipster-geek image. The sound from Claves fits the performers' aims well, and the album introduces some depth into the often showy piano duet repertory.
