Compared with a more extensive survey, like the 10-disc Ennio Morricone Chronicles released by BMG International in 1999, Ennio Morricone: Itinerary of a Genius is decent for its modest size, but perhaps most practical as an introductory sampler; since this twofer is split between orchestral tracks and chamber arrangements on Disc 1 and piano transcriptions and etudes on Disc 2, the amount of authentic film music is rather limited, and not as wide-ranging as aficionados might desire. Because Morricone is one of the most prolific composers ever, noted for hundreds of scores in his long and distinguished career, a set this small barely touches on his most famous main titles or memorable excerpts. Yet while his themes from Once Upon a Time in the West, The Mission, Once Upon a Time in America, and Cinema Paradiso are probably the best known to American filmgoers, a greater number of tracks here are taken from European movies that are obscure stateside, except to foreign film buffs or devotees of Morricone's work. Newcomers searching for original soundtrack material would be better advised to try the two volumes of Morricone's music issued by Virgin, or A Fistful of Film Music: The Ennio Morricone Anthology on Rhino for more comprehensive coverage of his greatest film work. The piano transcriptions and original pieces, capably performed by Gilda Buttà, are mildly interesting studies, yet because they seem like such a slight part of Morricone's legacy, they may be regarded as non-essential filler.
